CURRENT STRUCTURE

In 1994 the Charity Commission approved two new charitable schemes which in effect led to the amalgamation of the three charities. The schemes are structured in such a way that the former properties of the Market Harborough Town Estate and Bates Charity and the Little Bowden Charity Estate are now consolidated into the ownership of the Market Harborough and The Bowdens Charity. Former properties of the Great Bowden Town Lands Charity are now consolidated into the ownership of the Town Lands (Great Bowden) Charity. The Town Lands (Great Bowden) Charity is able to apply a proportion of its income to the maintenance and repair of the fabric of Great Bowden Parish Church, with the balance of its income passing directly to the Market Harborough and The Bowdens Charity. The Market Harborough and The Bowdens Charity is required to apply its income for relief in need, and for such other charitable purposes for the general benefit of the inhabitants of the scheme area, for which provision is not made out of rates, taxes, or other public funds. The scheme area comprises the former Urban District of Market Harborough as constituted immediately before the Local Government review of the 1st April 1974.
